Does the book include a complete list of people buried at Riverview Cemetery?
The book does not list all of the burials. There are approximately 36,000 people interred at Riverview. People from around the country shared information on over 1000 deceased relatives who find Riverview their final resting place.
Will you write a second volume?
I will consider doing so because there are many more stories to tell. It is valuable to preserve family and local history for future generations. And, it is therapeutic to remember and pay tribute to the value of each life. This form of storytelling can enrich our living and honor our loved ones. I am keeping new information on file as people send it to me.
How can I find out where my relatives are buried? Where are the records?
The current owner of Riverview Cemetery is Mr. Tom Davis of Restoration Christian Fellowship (302.764.8885). The original handwritten burial records were given to him in January, 2003. Mr. Davis has not yet responded to requests by the Historical Society of Delaware (HSD) to copy, store, and protect the burial records. Prior to 2003, a group of volunteers (Friends of Riverview Cemetery) created a computer data-base of burial information from 1930 to 2002. This data-base was given to the HSD in the fall of 2005 and is available for public inquires. (Call HSD @ 302.655.7161 for help).
Do you plan to write more books on the “residents” of other Delaware cemeteries?
My hope is that people who care about preserving local history will replicate this project throughout Delaware and throughout the country. To assist them, I have included my data collection form, found on page 218.
How was this project relevant to your work as a psychologist?
I have spent my career helping people renew their lives following loss. When I experienced the death of my father in 1998, I too needed to learn to live with loss and express my love. When I reached out to the Riverview Cemetery community and asked for their memories and photos, I entered a collaborative process and took an active role in my grieving process. Storytelling is an integral part of continuing the bonds and honoring our loved ones as death ends a physical life not a relationship. The love lives on!
